Love truth, but pardon error.
âVoltaire, Seven Discourses in Verse on Man
Elizabeth watched Collinâs retreating back as he disappeared out the door. Slowly, she turned to face Patricia, whose stare had been burning through her.
âExplain.â Patricia sat and leaned across the table, her eyes sparking with interest.
âThereâs not a lot to explainââ Elizabeth began.
âI donât believe you. He called you by your Christian name, easily, like heâs done it a million timesâ¦â Her eyes widened. âAre you betrothed? Do you have a secret romanceâ?â
Elizabeth gasped. âNo, no.â She waved her hands. âWeâreâ¦â She wasnât sure how to explain it. They werenât exactly friends, or enemies, and certainly not lovers, but they wereâ¦something. Something new that sheâd never experienced, however she craved and recognized and needed it.
Patricia leaned forward more, as if the movement would coax the words from her friend. âYouâreâ¦â
âComplicated,â Elizabeth answered.
Patricia blew out a sigh. âThat was not helpful.â
âItâs true. Iâ¦Lord Penderdale and Iâ¦have not tried to kill each other yet, which is a success.â
âThis is decidedly less romantic than I was expecting,â Patricia stated flatly. âDo you think Michael gave him another black eye?â she mused.
âWould he?â Elizabeth turned in her chair to study the door, as if it would hold the answer.
âMaybe, I donât know. Heâs not been shy about his interest in you. But youâre one to be direct, yet still kind, so for you to remain his friend is answer enough for me. Iâm just not sure it is enough for him.â
âYour brother made his intentions known, and I am visiting today in hopes of talking to him. Iâ¦Iâm unable to return his sentiments.â She sighed. âItâs a little late now, Iâd assume. I feel terrible. My father always said my temper would be my downfall. It seems he was right.â
Patricia winced. âItâs a bit of a mess, is it not?â
Elizabeth turned back to her friend. âWhen did your brother leave?â
Patricia traced the grain of the wood table with her finger. âWell, when you called Lord Penderdale by his Christian name. I wasnât sure if it was a mistake. Your temper can be impressive,â she clarified. âBut when he called you âElizabeth,â it was clear it wasnât a slip of the tongue. I glanced at Michael then. His expression clouded over quickly, and then when you two continued fighting, forgetting both of us were present, he left.â
âI see.â Elizabeth took a deep breath. âI need to apologize to him. I may not have encouraged him, but I didnât discourage his affection either, and that wasâ¦weak of me.â
âHeâll forgive you.â
âI hope so, but itâs still important to ask and be humble about it. Iâm sure what just happened hurt him, and that wasnât right.â
Patricia nodded, then tipped her chin. âI wonder what they are talking about. I rather expected it to be an abrupt conversation.â
Elizabeth glanced to the door once more. âHeaven only knows.â
âOther than you as the main topic, you mean?â Patricia asked. âBut in all seriousness, he hasnât asked to court you? Lord Penderdale?â
Elizabeth shook her heard.
